What to expect at your first therapeutic massage (and how to get the most from it)

Before you arrive
There's no special preparation required. Wear whatever you're comfortable in. Avoid eating a heavy meal within an hour of your appointment, and try to arrive a few minutes early so you're not rushing.
If you have specific injuries, chronic conditions, or areas of concern, it helps to think about those beforehand so you can mention them during intake. But don't worry about having a perfect description. "My neck has been bothering me" is plenty.
The intake
Every first session at Fernwell starts with a brief conversation. We'll ask about:
- Areas of pain or tension
- Any injuries, surgeries, or medical conditions
- Medications that might affect sensation or bruising
- Your experience with massage (if any)
- Pressure preferences
This takes about five minutes. The goal is to make sure the session is tailored to your body that day, not a generic routine.
During the session
You'll be on the table under a sheet and blanket. Only the area being worked on is uncovered at any time. The room is warm, quiet, and dimly lit.
Communicating pressure is the single most important thing you can do during a massage. "More pressure" and "less pressure" are both completely normal requests. A good therapist wants that feedback. Pain is not productive. If something hurts beyond a "good hurt," say so.
You don't need to make conversation. Most clients close their eyes and drift. Some fall asleep. All of that is fine.
After the session
Drink water. This isn't a myth. Massage increases circulation and can release metabolic waste from compressed tissues. Hydration helps your body process that.
You might feel slightly sore the next day, especially if we did deeper work. This is normal and typically resolves within 24 hours. Think of it like the feeling after a good workout.
How to decide if it's working
One session can provide significant relief, but the real benefits of therapeutic massage build over time. Most clients notice a clear shift after three to four sessions, particularly for chronic patterns.
If you're unsure whether massage is the right approach for what you're dealing with, we're happy to talk through it before you book. No pressure, no sales pitch.
